Waverley Station - Edinburgh
Project - Waverley Steps
Edinburgh
Holemasters Scotland Ltd was recently awarded the contract for removing the Concrete infill feature situated between the princess Mall and the stairs on the Waverley steps which are used by around 5 million people every year, the main pedestrian access route to princess street from the Waverley train station as part of £150 million refurbishment program.
Due to the location of the still occupied Princess Mall shopping centre and the Balmoral hotel a method had to be used that would minimise the noise and vibration so that the businesses could remain trading without disruption.
Holemasters-Scotland Ltd proposed the use of Diamond drilling and hydraulic bursting techniques to achieve the Principle contractor Morgan Sindall requirements.
Firstly 190no 112mm diameter cores were drilled into the structure up to 1.3m deep in a pattern that would maximise the burst with fewer holes allowing for a more efficient and safer removal.
As part of the drilling operations and our commitment to safe guarding the environment the cement slurry generated was collected at source and decanted into 1m3 containers this will then be removed from site and turned in to cakes for disposal at a later date.
On completion of the cores the 4” hydraulic bursting head applying 120 ton of force driven by an air cooled power pack was inserted into the formed holes always being careful to burst out to an open edge so as not to cause damage to the masonry wall situated directly at the back of the infill.
After only a few days of operations Holemasters-Scotland Ltd removed 156 tons of concrete with no disruptions to the neighbours and keeps Morgan Sindall program on schedule.
